UK-New Zealand trade deal close but will only have a ‘minuscule’ impact in British shops, experts say

Sam Lowe, of the Centre for European Reform, said: “I don’t think there will be much noticeable impact whatsoever. We’re talking about a country that’s quite small and on the other side of the world.

“At best we’re talking about perhaps some additional variety in supermarkets. You could see New Zealand wine stocked more frequently, or it being half a pence cheaper or something like that, but we’re not talking about anything major and you wouldn’t expect there to be.”

Mr Lowe said the UK’s ambition would be to trumpet a new trade deal, as they are “broadly popular and a certifiable trophy for the post-Brexit era”.

It will also be “useful insofar as it makes it easier to accede to the CPTPP”, he added, as New Zealand is a “core member” of the 11-nation bloc and is likely to now support UK joining as a condition of the agreement.
