Met de overname van BG kiest Shell voor een strategie waar LNG centraal staat. Dit zal tot veranderingen in de internationale handel in aardgas leiden. Shell heeft daarmee een leidende rol om de ontwikkeling van een mondiale LNG-markt aan te jagen. En dat is gunstig voor Europa's energiezekerheid.Shell wordt door de overname de grootste producent van vloeibaar aardgas, ofwel LNG. In 2018 zal de LNG-productie ongeveer 45 miljoen ton zijn (op dit moment is dat 26 miljoen ton). Daarmee heeft Shell 18 procent van de wereldproductie in handen, en twee keer meer dan grote concurrent ExxonMobil. Volgens de recent gepubliceerde ‘BP Energy Outlook 2035' zal de handel in LNG met 4.3 procent per jaar groeien. De studie verwacht dat LNG in 2035 de belangrijkste vorm wordt van handel in aardgas, belangrijker dan via pijpleidingen. BG heeft grote LNG-projecten in onder andere Australië, offshore Tanzania en in Egypte. Naast Shell's eigen activiteiten in het Midden-Oosten en Azië is het nieuwe bedrijf daardoor goed gepositioneerd om zowel de Europese als Aziatische LNG-markt te bedienen. De vraag naar LNG zal op beide continenten toenemen, maar om verschillende redenen.Shell wordt hofleverancier van LNG aan China. Daar zal de vraag naar LNG blijven stijgen door de gestaag groeiende economie, maar ook vanwege zorgen om de luchtkwaliteit.  Met de overstap van kolen naar gas hoopt Beijing de luchtverontreiniging aan te pakken. Door de giftige smog is de gemiddelde levensverwachting van mensen in noordoost-China vijf jaar korter dan in de rest van het land. Los van de gezondheidsklachten drukt dit de economische groei en leidt het tot sociale onrust. Deze ontwikkelingen worden serieus genomen, want ze kunnen de legitimiteit van de Chinese communistische partij aantasten. Ook is LNG beter voor het milieu. Hoewel het een hogere CO2-uitstoot heeft dan aardgas vervoerd via pijpleidingen - met het transport en vloeibaar maken van LNG gaat veel energie verloren - is het schoner dan kolen en olie. In Europa zal het gebruik van LNG om andere redenen stijgen. De gasvelden in de Noordzee raken langzaam uitgeput en om zijn klimaatdoelstellingen te halen zal Europa kolen moeten vervangen door schonere energiebronnen. De Europese gasimport zal hierdoor toenemen. Maar het conflict in Oekraïne en de spanningen met Rusland dwingen de Europese Unie om de afhankelijkheid van de Russische gasimport te verminderen. LNG biedt een alternatief. Volgens de ‘BP Energy Outlook' komt in 2015 ongeveer 80 procent van de Europese gasimport via pijpleidingen. In 2035 zal LNG een derde van de Europese gasimport voorzien. Op 25 februari heeft de Europese Commissie een strategie voor energieveiligheid gepresenteerd.
